More than 50 young women participated in a financial literacy and life skills workshop hosted by SBM Offshore Guyana earlier this month in collaboration with the Vurlon Mills Football Academy (VMFA).
According to a statement from the company, the two-day workshop, titled From the Field to the Future: Building Financial Confidence, Life Skills & Entrepreneurial Thinking, was held on July 4 and forms part of an initiative aimed at equipping young women with financial, digital and personal development skills.
The statement said participants included members of the Vurlon Mills Football Academy and the National Coordinating Coalition’s Enhancing Livelihoods Youth Literacy Programme. The sessions were facilitated by Fiscal Frontier.
Topics covered included financial literacy, digital safety, entrepreneurship and life skills, with participants receiving guidance on money management, online safety and decision-making.
SBM Offshore Guyana Country General Manager Martin Cheong encouraged the participants to make the most of the opportunity.
“While you may come from different backgrounds and have different interests, you are all here because you have potential, talent and a bright future ahead of you. Financial confidence isn’t about how much money you have. It’s about making smart choices with what you do have and working toward the future you want for yourself,” he said.
Vurlon Mills, founder of the Vurlon Mills Football Academy, thanked SBM Offshore Guyana for supporting the programme, saying the initiative complements the values taught through sport.
“We are grateful to SBM Offshore Guyana for creating opportunities like this that empower our young women beyond the football field. At VMFA, football teaches discipline, teamwork, leadership and confidence, but when those qualities are combined with financial literacy and life skills, our players are even better equipped for the future,” he said.
SBM Offshore said the workshop forms part of its youth development programme and is intended to provide participants with practical skills that support education, employment and entrepreneurship.
A second workshop is scheduled for September and will build on the topics introduced during the first session, the company said.
