The Guyana Police Force (GPF) today warned the public about fraudulent text messages purporting to be official notices for outstanding traffic fines.
According to the police, the messages threaten recipients with legal action, additional financial penalties or court proceedings unless payment is made within a stipulated period. Recipients are directed to a fraudulent website and asked to provide personal and financial information.
The GPF said the messages are not authentic and did not originate from the force.
Members of the public were advised not to click links in unsolicited messages, enter personal or banking information on unverified websites or make payments through any site other than the GPF’s official portal.
The force said its only official website is www.guyanapoliceforce.gy and that payments are made through MMG, not by card as the scam messages suggest. Persons seeking to verify or pay traffic fines should access the official portal through that website.
Anyone receiving a fraudulent message was advised to delete it immediately, report it to the police and warn relatives and friends, particularly elderly and vulnerable persons who may be targeted.
The GPF said it was investigating the scheme and working with the relevant authorities to identify those responsible.
