Two get 25 years for murder of ‘Eyelash’ at Cane Grove

Two persons were yesterday  sentenced to 25 years imprisonment each for the murder of Gopaul Seeram, also known as `Eyelash’, in February 2020 at Long Dam, Coconut Dam, Cane Grove, East Coast Demerara.

The sentences were handed down by Justice Sandil Kissoon at the High Court in Demerara.

The convicted persons, Deomattie Salickram and Dhanraj Ramkishan, were found guilty of murdering Seeram on February 4, 2020. Salickram was represented by attorney Mikel Puran, while Ramkishan was represented by attorney Excellence Dazzell.

The court heard that the two accused persons, who were in a common-law relationship but were living separately at the time, were involved in an altercation with Seeram, who was Ramkishan’s neighbour at Long Dam, Cane Grove.

During the incident, both accused allegedly armed themselves with pieces of wood and beat Seeram about his body. He sustained multiple injuries, including fractures to his skull, jaw, left leg and arm, dislocated wrists, and a ruptured spleen.

Seeram succumbed to his injuries on February 5, 2020.

The police in a press statement had said that enquiries revealed that Salickram would usually called Seeram’s wife, Shakeela Kishore to enquire if Ramkishan was at home before going to his place.

On the day in question the police said that Salickram called Kishore who reportedly ended the call without responding.  “The female suspect, later went to the deceased’s (Seeram’s) home, confronted his spouse (Kishore) and they had an exchange of words which led to the intervention of their husbands (Seeram and Salickram),” the police had explained.

During the process, the police said the suspects allegedly armed themselves with two pieces of wood which they used to beat Seeram.
