Cumberland businessman dies in accident, Dr Ramayya held

Ishwarnauth “Ajay” Bisram

The police are investigating an accident on the Nigg Public Road, Corentyne, which claimed the life of a 42-year-old businessman of East Canje on Saturday night.

The dead man has been identified as Ishwarnauth “Ajay” Bisram of Lot 16 Cumberland Village, East Canje, Berbice.

The accident occurred at approximately 9.55 pm and involved motor car PZZ 1906, driven by a 79-year-old doctor of Whim Village, Corentyne.

While the police release did not identify the doctor, Kiskadee Watch has been informed that it is well known herbal doctor and political activist Dr. Veerasammy Ramayya.

According to the police, preliminary investigations revealed that the car was proceeding east along the northern driving lane when Bisram allegedly walked across the road from south to north and into its path.

The driver reportedly applied brakes but the front of the vehicle struck Bisram.

Bisram sustained injuries and was taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor. His body is at Ramoo’s Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination.

His sister, Sandy Bisram, of Fyrish Koker Dam, told reporters that she learnt of her brother’s death during a telephone call at around 11 pm.

She said her son, who had been attending a wake in a nearby village, was sent to the hospital and confirmed Bisram’s death. Upon arriving at the hospital, she saw her brother lying unresponsive with his head heavily bandaged.

“I screamed at him to get up. ‘Get up! This can’t be true.’ But he did not respond,” she recounted.

According to Sandy Bisram, she was told that her brother had purchased food from a roadside vendor opposite a Chinese restaurant at Nigg shortly before the accident. He was reportedly attempting to cross the road when he was struck.

She said she saw the driver, Dr Ramayya, at the hospital but did not speak to him. She is calling for justice for her brother.

Police said a breathalyser test administered on the driver returned a reading of 11 micrograms, which is below the prescribed legal limit.

CCTV cameras were observed in the vicinity of the accident and the footage is expected to be reviewed as part of the investigation.

The driver remains in police custody.

Bisram operated a supermarket and was also involved in the sale of plucked chickens.
