The daughter of late 90-year-old Guyanese artist Jorge Bowenforbes says she remains without answers about her father’s death, stating she was told he had what appeared to be two holes on each side of his temple and that the licensed firearm he owned is now missing.
Jewel Forbes, who is based outside Guyana, said she was able to bury her father but has yet to receive any further information from police about the investigation into his death.
According to Jewel, she was told that there were injuries on both sides of her father’s head.
She believes the nature of those injuries could indicate that he was shot.
“That can only mean that someone shot him in the head,” Jewel said, while questioning why, in her view, there has been no further communication from police.
However, the circumstances surrounding the injuries have not been publicly confirmed by police, and it remains unclear what caused the injuries.
Jewel also raised concern over her father’s licensed firearm, which she said has not been found.
“He had a licence to carry a weapon,” she said, adding that the firearm is now missing.
Jewel said she has tried contacting the police department and the corporal who took her statement but has been unable to get through.
She believes police may need to examine surveillance footage as part of the investigation but said her absence from Guyana has made it difficult for her to personally follow up on matters.
Bowenforbes was found dead inside his home at Lot 472, Schoonord, West Demerara, in September after relatives became concerned when they could not reach him.
His daughter had previously said that a family friend who went to check on him detected a smell coming from the house before police were called.
Bowenforbes was subsequently found dead inside the property.
Jewel had earlier told Kiskadee Watch that she suspected her father was murdered and said the house appeared to have been ransacked.
She has now returned to the matter following her father’s burial, saying she remains troubled by what she was told about his injuries and the missing firearm.
Jewel also expressed disappointment over what she described as the lack of public attention surrounding her father’s death.
She said that, despite Bowenforbes being an artist with a long history in Guyana’s creative community, she had seen no public reporting about his death until Kiskadee Watch contacted her and reported on the circumstances.
Jewel said she expects to return to Guyana sooner than planned to help organise her father’s affairs and continue seeking answers.
Police have not publicly released details on the circumstances surrounding Jorge Bowenforbes’ death or confirmed the nature of his injuries.
The investigation remains ongoing.
