NA prison escapee recaptured at Springlands; parents arrested

Convicted prisoner Budnarine Persaud, who escaped from the New Amsterdam Prison, was recaptured at Springlands early yesterday along with his parents, the Guyana Prison Service (GPS) said.

In a public notice, the GPS said police arrested Persaud, his father Seram Persaud and his mother Rajmattie Jaikarran at about 3.30 am on Wednesday. All three were taken to the Springlands Police Station for questioning.

The prison service said they would face criminal charges, but did not specify the alleged offences or explain what role the parents were suspected of playing in the escape.

The GPS said an investigation was continuing and that anyone found to have neglected their duties would be held accountable. It thanked the public and the police for their assistance in recapturing Persaud.
