The president-elect of Colombia, Abelardo de la Espriella, has held a telephone conversation with the head of state of Guyana, Irfaan Ali, in which both have discussed the creation of a strategic alliance focused on regional security, energy cooperation, and the promotion of the gas sector.

As detailed by the press office of the president-elect, during the exchange the two leaders reviewed different formulas to deepen bilateral collaboration in areas considered key by both governments.

In this regard, Spanish newspaper Demócrata said the statement specifies that “both leaders have explored the bases of a bilateral strategic alliance in three different priorities: regional security, energy cooperation, and the development of the gas sector.”

The official note highlights Guyana’s notable potential in the hydrocarbon industry, a sector in which the country has registered strong growth in recent years, and points out that closer cooperation could support the plans of the next Colombian Executive to reactivate energy exploration and production.

In this context, Demócrata  said that the text emphasizes that “an alliance with Guyana on this front would provide knowledge, investment, and high-value technical cooperation for this purpose.”

During the call, De la Espriella and Ali also agreed on the importance of strengthening coordination between the countries of the region to face common challenges such as transnational organized crime and drug trafficking.
