A police inspector has been placed under close arrest following allegations that he injured his 14-year-old son with a hammer and subsequently beat him with an electrical extension cord.
In a statement, police said the 36-year-old inspector, of La Grange, West Bank Demerara, was placed under close arrest on Wednesday as investigations continue into the assault causing actual bodily harm.
According to police, preliminary investigations revealed that during October, the inspector threw a hammer at the teenager after he reportedly misplaced a key. The hammer struck the boy’s left ankle, causing injuries.
Police said that at around 7.30 am on Wednesday, October 28, the inspector became angry after the teenager failed to complete his household chores. He reportedly locked the boy in a bedroom and beat him about his body with an electrical extension cord.
The matter was subsequently reported to the Childcare and Protection Agency and an investigation was launched.
The teenager was interviewed by the relevant authorities and taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he was examined by a doctor. Police also visited the location as part of their enquiries.
