Seven people have been left homeless after a house was destroyed by fire at Lot 55 Winkle Road, New Amsterdam last night.

The Guyana Fire Service said firefighters from the New Amsterdam Fire Station responded promptly to reports of the blaze and found the wooden and concrete building completely engulfed in flames upon arrival.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the affected building, preventing it from spreading to nearby properties.

The house and all of its contents were destroyed. A motorcycle, an electric bike and a generator that were in the yard were also destroyed.

According to the Fire Service, preliminary investigations suggest the fire may have been deliberately set by person(s) unknown.

Investigations are continuing.
