Milaimi Alli has been recharged with the murder of her husband, fuel dealer Ramzan Alli, more than 17 years after his death and nearly six years after she was discharged on a previous murder charge arising from the same case.
Alli appeared yesterday, before Magistrate Teriq Mohamed at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court, where the murder charge was read to her. She was represented by attorney Bernard DaSilva, who also represented her when she was first charged in 2019.
Back in 2019 the police issued a wanted bulletin for Alli for questioning in relation to Ramzan Alli’s murder. She was subsequently arrested at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri, upon her return to Guyana, and was placed in the custody of investigators from the Major Crimes Unit.
Ramzan Alli was killed in July 2009. According to police reports at the time, he left his home at about 9:20 p.m. on July 11, 2009, after receiving a telephone call.
When he failed to return home, relatives and employees conducted a search the following morning and discovered his rented car along the Coldingen Railway Embankment Road. Police were contacted, and a subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered Alli’s body in the trunk.
Police had reported that the fuel dealer was found with a plastic bag duct-taped over his head.
A wanted bulletin issued by police in April 2019 identified Milaimi Alli as being wanted for questioning in connection with the murder, which occurred at Coldingen, East Coast Demerara. Her last known addresses were listed as Good Hope, East Coast Demerara; Gordon Street, Kitty; and Richmond Hill, Queens, New York.
The woman was first charged with murder in 2019, approximately ten years after the killing. Following a preliminary inquiry and submissions by her defence, she was discharged in December 2020.
Police are now relying on what they described in court as new evidence, reportedly including statements from prisoner Sadiek Mitchell, who had entered into a plea bargain and was subsequently said to have provided information to investigators.
Mitchell, a father of three and taxi driver, was himself previously charged in connection with Ramzan Alli’s murder.
During yesterday’s proceedings, DaSilva informed the court that Alli is suffering from a series of illnesses and presented her medical information. The court subsequently ordered that prison authorities ensure she receives her prescribed medication while in custody.
Alli was not required to plead to the indictable murder charge at the Magistrate’s Court.
The matter was adjourned to September 29, 2026, for disclosure.
