Letters To The Editor

We should be able to acknowledge our achievements while addressing our challenges honestly

Dear Editor,

As a public communications analyst, I remain focused on developments affecting Guyanese citizens, businesses, and communities, particularly issues that influence public confidence, national progress, and the quality of life.

The MV Barima tragedy continues to raise questions about accountability and the need for closure for the affected family. Such incidents remind us of the importance of transparency, responsible leadership, and meaningful communication with the public.

Copper theft is another growing concern, with the potential to cause millions of dollars in losses to businesses and disrupt essential services. The reported targeting of the Demerara River Bridge highlights the importance of protecting critical infrastructure and strengthening measures to prevent theft and vandalism.

Public safety also deserves continued attention. According to figures attributed to Statbase, Guyana’s crime index for 2026 is reportedly 66.9. While crime indices must be interpreted according to their methodology and limitations, public concerns about crime, security, and confidence in law enforcement remain important matters for national discussion.

Meanwhile, Guyana and the wider Caribbean continue to face significant health challenges, including mental health concerns, climate-related health risks, and questions surrounding the sustainability of healthcare workforces. These issues require sustained investment, public education, regional cooperation, and long-term planning.

However, our national conversation should not be dominated by difficulties alone. It is equally important to recognise the opportunities emerging from Guyana’s rapid economic transformation and growing international profile.

Tourism, cultural development, entrepreneurship, and investment continue to offer opportunities to diversify the economy and create employment. The establishment of a development bank also represents an opportunity to improve access to financing for businesses and entrepreneurs, provided that lending is accessible, transparent, and responsive to the needs of productive sectors.

The challenge before Guyana is to ensure that economic growth translates into meaningful benefits for ordinary citizens. Development must be accompanied by accountability, public safety, stronger social services, environmental resilience, and opportunities for local businesses to thrive.

Guyana has much to celebrate, but there is also important work to be done. We should be able to acknowledge our achievements while addressing our challenges honestly and constructively.

National progress is not measured by economic growth alone, but also by the safety, well-being, confidence, and opportunities available to the people who call this country home.

Sincerely,

Mr Blane R Bunbury
