Basketball: Guyana overpowers Dominica to strengthen AmeriCup campaign

Guyana captain Stanton Rose Jr. led from the front with 20 points.

Guyana produced a strong second-half performance to defeat Dominica 68-53 on Friday night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, strengthening their position in the group phase of the FIBA AmeriCup 2029 CBC Pre-Qualifiers.

Stanton Rose led all scorers with 20 points. The guard also collected eight rebounds, five assists and four steals while converting 11 of his 14 free-throw attempts.

Dominica made the better start and led 16-13 after the opening quarter, but Guyana tightened its defence and began to take control during the second period.

A fast-break layup by Brandon Andrew Bento tied the game at 24-24 with 2:24 remaining before halftime. Guyana completed the quarter with a 13-8 advantage to carry a 26-24 lead into the break.

The hosts then took firm control after the interval, outscoring Dominica 21-19 in the third quarter before winning the final period by the same 21-10 margin.

Kevon Wiggins supported Rose with 16 points and played an important role in the run that helped Guyana break the game open. Kevin Mickle recorded a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds, along with four steals.

Umar Rashid narrowly missed a double-double, finishing with 10 points, nine rebounds, four steals and two blocks. Ethan Boland led Dominica with 13 points, three rebounds and one steal.

Guyana’s defensive pressure and timely scoring proved decisive as the hosts recovered from their slow start and steadily widened the gap to secure the 15-point victory.

Guyana will conclude its group campaign against Bermuda today at 8:00 p.m. at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
