The Barbados Tridents survived a stunning late assault from Andre Russell to defeat the Jamaica Kingsmen by five runs and secure their first victory of the 2026 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League at Sabina Park.
Chasing 207 for victory, Jamaica appeared out of the contest after losing three early wickets. However, Russell blasted 68 from 38 deliveries, including nine sixes, to carry the home side to the brink of an unlikely win in its first CPL match in Jamaica since 2019.
With 15 runs needed from the final over, bowled by Ramon Simmonds, Russell struck a six down the ground to reduce the equation to six runs from three balls. However, a fielding adjustment worked for the Tridents as Russell sliced the next delivery into the hands of Rivaldo Clarke.
Vitel Lawes was then run out from the following ball, ending Jamaica’s fightback and sealing a tense victory for Barbados.
Earlier, Brandon King and Sherfane Rutherford shared a superb 93-run partnership to propel the Tridents to 206-3.
Teenager Zachary Carter made an immediate impact on his CPL debut, smashing 27 from 15 balls. His attacking innings ended when Reeza Hendricks completed a catch near the deep-square boundary off Jediah Blades.
Despite Carter’s dismissal, Barbados reached 67-1 at the end of the Powerplay.
Quinton de Kock provided stability with a controlled 42 before Hassan Khan completed an excellent return catch. Rutherford then joined King and quickly increased the scoring rate.
King rediscovered his timing after a brief quiet period, and the pair produced several productive overs following the strategic timeout. Despite determined spells from Hassan and Hunain Shah, the Tridents remained in control and finished with an imposing total.
Jamaica’s chase began disastrously when Chris Green removed Shayan Jahangir with the third ball of the innings. Daniel Sams then dismissed Hendricks and Kirk McKenzie within his first three deliveries, leaving the Kingsmen struggling at 12-3 after two overs.
Captain Rovman Powell revived the home crowd with a brisk 38 from 24 balls before he was removed by Gudakesh Motie.
Russell then launched his spectacular counterattack, reaching his half-century from only 27 deliveries. He received valuable support from 19-year-old Lawes, who struck four sixes during a 69-run partnership that pushed the contest into the final over.
Their efforts ultimately fell just short as the Tridents held their nerve to open their account in the tournament.
