Leung, Newton set for Caribbean cycling challenge in Belize

L-R: Alex Newton, coach Brentnol Carmichael, and Alexander Leung.

Guyana’s junior cyclists Alexander Leung and Alex Newton are in Belize to compete in the 2026 Caribbean Junior Road Cycling Championships, which will be contested this weekend.

The two riders, accompanied by national cycling coach Brentnol Carmichael, will represent Guyana in the junior men’s individual time trial on Saturday and the road race on Sunday.

Competition will begin with the 20-kilometre individual time trial along the Boom–Hattieville Road on Saturday, August 22. The event is scheduled to start at 7:00 a.m. Belize time, which is 9:00 a.m. in Guyana.

Leung and Newton will return to action on Sunday, August 23, in the 93.6-kilometre junior men’s road race along the Philip Goldson Highway. The race, which will be contested over 12 laps, is also scheduled to begin at 7:00 a.m. in Belize.

The championship programme will officially get underway with the team presentation at the Best Western Plus Belize Biltmore Plaza at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The regional event caters for junior and youth cyclists in the male and female divisions.

Leung, who represents Continental Cycling Club, is in his final season at the junior level and enters the championships following several strong performances during the year. Newton, a member of KFC Evolution, has also shown encouraging form on the local circuit.

Both riders recently completed a two-week training programme at the Union Cycliste Internationale World Cycling Centre Continental Development Satellite in Couva, Trinidad and Tobago. The programme provided them with specialised preparation ahead of the regional assignment.

Carmichael also strengthened his qualifications during the visit to Trinidad and Tobago by completing a UCI Level Two Coaching Course.

Guyana’s participation was made possible through support from the Guyana Olympic Association and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport.
