The Guyana Football Federation (GFF), through its refereeing department headed by Lenval Peart, hosted an Elite Referee Pre-Season Programme over the weekend as preparations continued for the upcoming elite football season.

The programme was designed to prepare match officials for top-level competition by reinforcing the consistent application of the International Football Association Board’s (IFAB) Laws of the Game and introducing the 2026/27 law amendments and interpretations.

“The programme was designed to strengthen the technical, physical and decision-making skills required for officiating at the highest level,” Peart said.

The sessions combined classroom instruction, video analysis, interactive discussions, fitness activities and practical on-field exercises. Referees reviewed key law concepts, discussed established officiating practices and prepared for the demands of elite competition.

Peart said the practical sessions focused on positioning, movement, teamwork, communication, match management and decision-making in realistic match situations.

“These exercises were intended to ensure that our officials can apply the Laws of the Game confidently and consistently. We want every referee to begin the season with the knowledge, confidence and professionalism needed to deliver high-quality performances,” he said.

Peart also noted that the new law changes are intended to reduce time-wasting and improve the flow of matches.

“The changes should help to create a more consistent flow of play, allowing teams and players to carry out their tactical plans with fewer unnecessary interruptions,” he added.
