Guyana’s 4x400m quartet sets new national U20 record in Oregon

Malachi Austin delivered a strong 45.39-second anchor leg to complete the record-breaking performance.

Guyana’s men’s 4×400-metre relay team produced a new national Under-20 record yesterday at the World U20 Championships in Oregon, USA, despite missing out on a place in the final.

The quartet of Tishawn Easton, Dejuan Grant, Skylar Charles and Malachi Austin clocked three minutes, 10.93 seconds to finish fifth in Heat One.

Easton ran the opening leg in 47.46 seconds before Grant completed his leg in 48.54. Charles recorded 49.54 on the third leg, while Austin delivered a strong 45.39-second anchor leg to complete the record-breaking performance.

Only the top three teams gained automatic advancement from the heat. Botswana won in a season-best 3:08.22, narrowly ahead of France, which clocked 3:08.28. Germany secured the final automatic qualifying position with a season-best 3:08.88.

Sri Lanka placed fourth in 3:09.68, followed by Guyana and Mexico, which finished sixth in 3:11.15.

Botswana’s team comprised Warona Mbigi Mokgosi, Junior Phatsima, Mabua Resego and Tsaone Dintwa, while France fielded Lucas Couderc, Rayan Bouhouche, Kristen Colly and Hugo Charlet.

Germany was represented by Amir Bilal Chaib Cuti, Tjark Schult, Milan Stadler and Michal Fatyga.

Although Guyana did not advance, the national record marked an encouraging performance by the country’s young quarter-milers on the global stage.
