Twenty-one-year-old batting all-rounder Michael Palmer of St. Maarten will join the Guyana Amazon Warriors through a new developmental scholarship launched by NAGICO Insurances and the ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League (GSL).
The initiative, which forms part of the league’s Super We platform, will give Palmer exposure to a high-performance professional cricket environment during the 2026 tournament. The Guyana Amazon Warriors are the home franchise and defending champions.
The scholarship programme was initiated by the GSL and is fully supported by NAGICO Insurances, which is headquartered in St. Maarten. It is intended to create opportunities for emerging Caribbean players to develop their skills and gain experience alongside leading regional and international cricketers.
NAGICO Group Chief Executive Officer Kyria Ali said the programme represents an investment in the potential of young people.
“This initiative is about more than giving talented youth a chance to watch elite cricket. It is about giving them the opportunity to experience it from the inside, to share a dressing room with some of the world’s best players, observe the professionalism and discipline that define success, and return home inspired to pursue their own dreams,” Ali said.
She added that NAGICO was proud to support the first-of-its-kind programme and hoped to expand it with the GSL in the future.
“We believe that this experience can ignite passion, build confidence and help shape the next generation of Caribbean sporting talent. Sometimes, a single opportunity can change the course of a young person’s future, and we are honoured to work alongside the Global Super League team to help make that possible,” Ali said.
GSL Chairman Sir Clive Lloyd welcomed the scholarship and described it as an investment in the future of Caribbean cricket.
“One of the key objectives of the ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League is to create opportunities that extend beyond the matches themselves,” Lloyd said.
He noted that the scholarship would give Palmer valuable exposure to a professional setting while helping to prepare the next generation of Caribbean players to carry the region’s cricketing legacy forward.
The programme adds a developmental component to the 2026 GSL and strengthens the tournament’s role in promoting young Caribbean talent while providing international competition.
The ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League will be played in Guyana from July 23 to August 1. The Amazon Warriors will defend their title against Pakistan’s Lahore Qalandars, the UAE’s Desert Vipers, Australia’s Perth Scorchers XI and the San Francisco Unicorns of the United States.
