Babysitter remanded on child-stealing charge

Charged: Dariana Figuera

A 20-year-old babysitter was yesterday remanded to prison after being charged with stealing a seven-month-old infant whom she allegedly took from Port Kaituma to the coast without the mother’s permission.

Dariana Figuera, a Venezuelan national of White Water Village, North West District, appeared virtually before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh at the Port Kaituma Magistrate’s Court.

She was not required to plead to the charge, laid under Section 90(a) of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act. Bail was refused and she was remanded until November 11.

According to police, the infant’s mother left the child in Figuera’s care at Oronoque, Port Kaituma, on October 28 while she went to work.

Figuera allegedly left the residence with the infant and boarded a flight from Port Kaituma to Ogle International Airport without the mother’s knowledge or permission.

Acting on information received, police located Figuera and the infant at Hague Backdam, West Coast Demerara, at approximately 11.20 pm that day.

The child was safely recovered and Figuera was arrested.
