A fire suspected to have been deliberately set damaged the Konawaruk wooden bridge yesterday, restricting the passage of heavy-duty vehicles along the major access route to and from Mahdia, Region Eight.
Police said people travelling along the trail discovered the fire and extinguished the flames.
Ranks who visited the location at approximately 7.15 am observed smoke coming from the bridge. The Guyana Fire Service was summoned and extinguished the remaining burning debris.
The middle and left sections of the structure were damaged. Smaller vehicles can still cross, police said.
Investigators suspect that unidentified persons set the bridge alight. No arrests have been made and investigations are continuing.
