A man was forcibly escorted into a police station by ranks in uniform during an incident captured on video, which showed officers physically restraining and dragging him while several persons looked on.
The approximately 40-second recording, which was shared on Team Mohamed’s Facebook page, begins with a rank wearing a reflective vest gripping the man around the upper body and neck area outside the station building. As the man appeared to resist, shouting that he was being bullied, the officer was seen pulling him through the entrance.
Once inside the station, at least two other uniformed ranks became involved. The video shows one officer holding the man from behind while another stood nearby as the confrontation continued near the front counter.
At one point, the man appeared to struggle with the officers as they attempted to keep him under control. One officer drew his gun while another signalled for him to put it away.
The footage further shows the ranks maintaining a physical hold on the man for several seconds before he was eventually moved towards a doorway inside the station.
Several persons, including what appeared to be family members and other police personnel, were present during the incident.
The circumstances that led to the confrontation were not immediately clear, and the video contains no visible indication of the offence for which the man was being detained. It is also unclear whether the man sustained any injuries during the incident.
The Guyana Police Force has not yet issued a statement on the matter. Questions remain regarding what prompted the arrest, whether such force was necessary, and whether an investigation into the officers’ conduct will be launched.
