GPL waives $1.6m contribution from not-for-profit

Guyana Power and Light Inc (GPL) has waived a $1.6 million capital contribution for an electricity connection to a new facility being constructed by the Youth for Hope Not-for-Profit Foundation at Yarrowkabra.

In a statement yesterday, GPL said the waiver would support the foundation’s project, which is intended to provide programmes in mental health, education, mentorship and skills development for young people.

According to the utility company, the Youth for Hope Not-for-Profit Foundation, founded by Amar Ram, has been involved in youth empowerment initiatives and community engagement programmes, including work at the Lusignan and Timehri prisons.

GPL said the waiver forms part of its support for community development initiatives and projects aimed at improving the lives of Guyanese.

Ram welcomed the company’s decision, describing the waiver as a significant contribution to the project and saying it demonstrated the value of partnerships between public entities and community organisations.

According to GPL, the Yarrowkabra facility is expected to provide programmes in mental health, education, leadership development, life skills, mentorship and community engagement for hundreds of young people.

The company said it intends to continue supporting organisations involved in community development initiatives across the country.
