An American Airlines (AA) flight bound for Guyana returned to Miami shortly after takeoff on Thursday following a dispute between a passenger and a flight attendant, but authorities said no assault occurred.
NBC6 South Florida reported that Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to gate D-7 at Miami International Airport at approximately 7:14 pm following a report of an alleged assault.
“The investigation revealed the passenger and flight attendant were involved in a verbal dispute and no assault was committed,” deputies said, according to NBC6.
The passenger was escorted off without incident and rebooked on another flight. American Airlines confirmed that flight 339 had returned because of a customer-related situation requiring attention, apologised for the inconvenience and said passengers would depart again shortly.
CBS Miami separately reported allegations that a passenger threatened a flight attendant during the aircraft’s ascent.
The accounts reviewed did not identify the passenger or establish whether charges were pursued. The Sheriff’s Office’s finding that no assault occurred did not specifically address whether threatening words had been used.
