Travis Belgrave and Aaliyah Moore will carry Guyana’s Golden Arrowhead during Friday evening’s Commonwealth Games opening ceremony in Glasgow, Scotland.
The selection marks a historic achievement for Belgrave, who will become the first Guyanese basketball player to serve as a flag bearer at the Commonwealth Games. He will share the responsibility with Moore, one of the country’s leading middle-distance athletes.
Belgrave’s appointment comes as Guyana prepares to make its Commonwealth Games debut in men’s 3×3 basketball. The national standout said the selection was one of the proudest moments of his sporting career and a significant achievement for basketball in Guyana.
He hopes Guyana’s participation will encourage young players to recognise the opportunities available through 3×3 basketball. Belgrave also credited the Guyana Basketball Federation for developing the format and creating opportunities for local athletes to compete internationally.
Belgrave will be joined by Kevin Mickle, Christian Hinckson and Anish Ramlall in Guyana’s four-man basketball squad.
Moore will also make her Commonwealth Games debut in Glasgow. The 24-year-old is among Guyana’s premier 800-metre runners and will be seeking to add to the country’s medal history at the Games.
Guyana has not won a Commonwealth Games medal since Troy Doris secured gold in the men’s triple jump at the 2018 edition on Australia’s Gold Coast.
The country will compete in athletics, swimming and men’s 3×3 basketball following the withdrawal of its boxing team. The boxers were ruled ineligible after mandatory testing results were not received within the required period.
Guyana’s athletics team includes Keliza Smith, Stefan Roach, Jackson Clarke, Moore, Noelex Holder, Akeem Stewart, Revon Williams, Simeon Adams and Shamar Horatio. Mark Scott, Thelson Williams and Lindon Phillips are the team officials.
Aleka Persaud, Chase Thompson and Delroy Tyrrell will represent Guyana in swimming, with Ewin Enmore serving as coach.
