Guyana’s men’s 3×3 basketball team will face Nigeria and 2022 silver medallists Australia today as it seeks a place in the knockout stage of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
The Guyanese must finish among the top three teams in their group to advance to the medal rounds. If they fall short, they will continue competing in the tournament’s classification matches.
Captain Travis Belgrave, Anish Ramlall, Kevin Mickle and Christian Hinckson have recorded one victory and two defeats in the country’s debut campaign.
Guyana opened the tournament with a competitive performance against hosts Scotland. The team remained in contention for much of the match before suffering a 21-14 defeat.
The Guyanese then endured a difficult second outing as New Zealand secured a commanding 21-3 victory.
However, Guyana recovered in its third group match to record the country’s first Commonwealth Games victory in 3×3 basketball, defeating the Cayman Islands 22-17.
Belgrave scored the game-winning basket to seal the historic result and revive Guyana’s chances of progressing beyond the group stage.
The victory has given the team renewed confidence ahead of its final two preliminary matches, but Guyana will need strong performances against Nigeria and Australia to secure one of the group’s three places in the medal rounds.
