Former national footballer and experienced administrator Troy Mendonca has officially announced his candidacy for President of the Guyana Football Federation at the organisation’s next election in 2027.
Mendonca, a senior figure at Camptown Football Club and co-founder of the Petra Organisation, said his decision followed careful reflection and discussions with his family and several members of the local football community.
“I stand before you humbled, grateful, and with a deep sense of responsibility to officially announce my candidacy for the Presidency of the Guyana Football Federation at the next election in 2027,” Mendonca said.
He said his campaign would focus on strategic planning, accountability, inclusion and sustainable decision-making as he seeks to move Guyanese football forward.
“I firmly believe that Guyanese football deserves our very best,” he declared. “My campaign will therefore be grounded in moving football forward through strategic planning, accountability, inclusion, and attainable, sustainable decisions.”
Mendonca outlined several areas he intends to prioritise, including player development from the grassroots to senior level, greater support for clubs and regional associations, expanded education programmes for coaches, referees and administrators, and improved football infrastructure.
He also pledged to strengthen partnerships with the government, private sector, clubs and regional member associations, while ensuring that Guyana’s national teams are properly prepared for regional and international competition.
“Together, we can build a federation that inspires confidence, develops talent, strengthens communities, and makes every Guyanese proud of our beautiful game,” Mendonca said.
His candidacy has received the full endorsement of Sterling Products Limited Chief Executive Officer Ramsay Ali, who said Mendonca possesses the qualities needed to lead the federation.
“Troy knows football. Simple,” Ali said. “He has the knowledge, experience, character, and commitment required to serve football at the highest administrative level in Guyana.”
Ali also pointed to Mendonca’s work with Dr. Marlan Cole through the Petra Organisation, which has played a major role in organising youth football tournaments and creating opportunities for young players across the country.
“Through that organisation they have achieved excellent results in the development of football in Guyana, particularly at the youth level,” Ali said.
He added that while the task of leading local football would not be easy, Mendonca was capable of assembling a strong team and guiding the sport in a positive direction.
“I hereby place my full support behind Mr. Troy Mendonca as he seeks to ascend to the presidency of the Guyana Football Federation,” Ali declared.
Mendonca called on members of the football fraternity to support and partner with his campaign as he seeks to begin what he described as a new chapter for the sport.
“This is our opportunity to write a new chapter, one built on unity, strategic planning, inclusion, transparency, and excellence,” he said.
