GOA funding clears the way for Leung and Newton to compete in Belize

Guyana’s participation in the Caribbean Junior Road Cycling Championships has been confirmed, with Alexander Leung and Alex Newton set to represent the country in Belize on August 22 and 23. There were initial concerns over the availability of the required funding, as confirmation of financial assistance was taking some time. However, a senior Guyana Cycling Federation official confirmed to Kiskadee Watch Sports that the Guyana Olympic Association provided approximately $1.2 million. That contribution, along with support from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, was enough to greenlight the team’s trip. Leung of Continental Cycling Club and Newton, who represents KFC Evolution, will compete in the junior men’s events. Coach Brentnol Carmichael will accompany the two-member team. The championships will open with a 20-kilometre individual time trial along Trial Boom Road on Saturday, August 22. The junior men will return the following day for a 93.6-kilometre road race on the Philip Goldson Highway, which will be contested over 12 laps. Leung is in his final year as a junior cyclist and has been in excellent form recently. Newton has also produced encouraging performances, giving Guyana two capable representatives for the regional championships. Their preparations received an important boost when they attended a two-week training programme at the Union Cycliste Internationale World Cycling Centre Continental Development Satellite in Couva, Trinidad and Tobago. Carmichael also used the trip to Trinidad and Tobago to advance his coaching development by completing a UCI Level Two Coaching Course.
