Lee clears key hurdle in bid for International Arbiter title

John Lee

John Lee has taken an important step towards becoming Guyana’s first International Arbiter after successfully completing the International Arbiter Certification Seminar examination conducted by the International Chess Federation’s Arbiters’ Commission.

The result moves Lee closer to earning FIDE’s advanced qualification for chess officials. He must now gain the required norms from four qualifying tournaments before his application for the title can be submitted.

Becoming an International Arbiter requires extensive knowledge of the Laws of Chess, competition and rating regulations, pairing systems, fair-play procedures and the use of electronic clocks. Candidates must also demonstrate impartiality and the ability to manage difficult situations during competition.

International Arbiters are trusted to officiate at major tournaments and ensure that games are conducted fairly and according to FIDE regulations. Their responsibilities include monitoring playing conditions, ruling on disputes and overseeing the technical operation of events.

Achieving the title would be a major milestone for Guyanese chess and could strengthen the country’s capacity to organise and manage international competitions. It would also provide another example of Guyana’s progress beyond player development.

Lee has served as an official at several local and regional tournaments, including Guyana’s national championships. His latest success adds to the experience he has gained through his continued involvement in the sport.

The Guyana Chess Federation congratulated Lee and thanked him for his dedicated and continued service to chess in Guyana.
