Patokie leads Guyana’s charge with a Goodwill bronze

Malakhiy Patokie won bronze for Guyana in the Boys’ 11-12 100-metre breaststroke at the 2026 Goodwill Swimming Championships.

Malakhiy Patokie converted a strong opening-night performance into a medal yesterday, earning bronze for Guyana in the Boys’ 11-12 100-metre breaststroke at the 2026 Goodwill Swimming Championships.

Patokie touched the wall in one minute, 18.87 seconds to secure Guyana’s best result from the Friday-evening and Saturday-morning sessions.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Kamden Williams won the event in a meet-record 1:16.26, edging Jamaica’s Steven Hoo Fung, who took silver in 1:17.63.

The Guyanese had signalled his medal potential on Friday when he placed fifth in the 50-metre breaststroke with a time of 36.56 seconds. Williams also won that race in a record 33.57 seconds.

Patokie remained Guyana’s most consistent performer across the two sessions. He added a seventh-place finish in Saturday’s 200-metre individual medley, clocking 2:42.88, and was eighth in the 50-metre butterfly in 31.56 seconds.

He had earlier placed ninth in the 100-metre backstroke in 1:16.68 and 11th in the 100-metre freestyle in 1:03.88 on Friday.

Guyana’s best relay performance during the opening evening came from the Boys’ 11-12 team, which finished fourth in the 400-metre medley relay in 6:26.47.

The country also contested several other Friday relays. Guyana placed fifth in the Girls’ 9-10 400-metre medley relay, sixth in the Boys’ 9-10 and Boys’ 13-14 races and seventh in the Boys’ 15-17 event.

On Saturday, Guyana’s Girls’ 9-10 medley relay team finished fifth in 3:01.86. The Girls’ 11-12 quartet placed sixth in 3:04.67, while the Boys’ 15-17 team was sixth in 2:08.15.

Akeisha Pulmeyere was another of Guyana’s busier swimmers. She finished 14th in the Girls’ 13-14 200-metre individual medley in 3:11.46 and occupied the same position in the 100-metre breaststroke after recording 1:40.73.

Among Guyana’s younger swimmers, Adelaide Roberts placed 10th in Saturday’s Girls’ 8-and-under 50-metre freestyle in 40.78 seconds. Other representatives included Aria McKoy, Zariah Dey, Katy Budhan, Jelani Odinga, Yadhav Toocaram, Zidan John, Kyra Soares and Makeen Hope.

The two sessions produced several new championship records. Standout efforts included Nya Ferguson of The Bahamas clocking 1:07.22 in Friday’s Girls’ 8-and-under 100-metre freestyle and 32.34 in Saturday’s 50-metre butterfly.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Nathaniel St. Louis also lowered the Boys’ 15-17 50-metre freestyle record to 23.45 seconds, while Khristian Allen set a Boys’ 13-14 50-metre butterfly mark of 26.84 seconds.

The championships are scheduled to continue through Sunday.
