-Opposition Leader’s phone in custody of police
The Facebook page of “Team Mohamed,” which had more than 500,000 followers, has disappeared from the platform, just hours after Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed told reporters that a video concerning alleged corruption linked to a $200 million land deal at Leonora would be released shortly.
The disappearance occurred last evening, after Mohamed appeared in court and later spoke to members of the media about why he had visited the area on Thursday where the land is located.
During court proceedings yesterday, following the conclusion of an extradition matter, co-defence attorney Siand Dhurjon told the court that Mohamed had gone to an area after receiving information concerning a one-acre plot of land at Leonora, reportedly valued at approximately $200 million.
Dhurjon told the court that the property was allegedly purchased through a shell company, Sea Spray Holdings Inc., by one of the President Irfaan Ali’s attorneys on the President’s behalf. He said Mohamed had gone to the area to make enquiries concerning the property.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of court, Mohamed confirmed that he had gone there to make enquiries.
He also said that a video concerning what he described as alleged corruption at Leonora involving the said land would be released shortly.
However, within hours of those comments, the Team Mohamed Facebook page disappeared from public view.
The development came just days after Mohamed was arrested on September 3 along with Eugene Thorne, Mario Mohamed and Dwayne Ross in connection with an investigation into alleged unauthorised and/or suspected drone activity. The four were subsequently released on their own recognisance.
Mohamed’s cellular devices were taken into police custody following his arrest.
In a letter dated September 4 and addressed to Police Commissioner Clifton Hicken, Mohamed’s attorney Eusi Anderson raised concerns over the disappearance of the Facebook page and demanded the immediate return of his client’s property.
Anderson said that as of 5:00 p.m. on September 4, the “Team Mohamed” page could no longer be found on Facebook.
According to Anderson, the page was primarily accessed by Mohamed through his mobile device, which remains in police custody. He stated that Mohamed did not log into any device to alter, impair or delete the page.
The attorney also said the seized devices contain sensitive and confidential information, including documentary and video evidence relating to what his client described as reports of corruption and fraud involving public individuals.
Anderson additionally demanded the return of two cellular phones — a Samsung Galaxy S26 and an iPhone 16 Pro Max — as well as two motor vehicles.
The vehicles were identified as a Toyota Land Cruiser, registration PAD 4000, registered in the name of Nadia Mohamed, and a Toyota Allion, registration PXX 5300.
He said both vehicles remained in police custody and that several personal items belonging to Mohamed and members of his family were inside one of them.
Mohamed’s sister, Hana Mohamed, also questioned the timing of the Facebook page’s disappearance.
“It is peculiar and highly coincidental that, within 24 hours of the Leader of the Opposition’s cellphones and other devices being taken into police custody, the Team Mohamed Facebook page was removed from public access,” she said.
“We are left to wonder whether this is merely a coincidence or a deliberate attempt to shut down one of the Leader of the Opposition’s primary channels of communication with the people of Guyana.”
Kiskadee Watch contacted Regional Division Three Commander Khali Pareshram for comment on the disappearance of the page.
“All information will be communicated via the CCU (communications unit),” Pareshram said before ending the call.
Kiskadee Watch had also earlier contacted Pareshram regarding the return of Mohamed’s cellular phone. The Regional Commander said the investigation was still ongoing before ending the call.
In his letter, Anderson demanded that Mohamed’s vehicles, cellular devices and other personal property be returned by 6:00 p.m. today, September 5.
He stated that if the property is not returned by the deadline, he has been instructed to institute legal proceedings without further notice.
