Female ranks of the Guyana Police Force now have another avenue to build their fitness, develop sporting skills and strengthen teamwork following the launch of the organisation’s women’s rugby team on Friday, September 18, 2026.
Founded by Carrin Carter and captained by Jelena Shepherd, the team creates an opportunity for women within the Force to become involved in rugby and represent the GPF.
Speaking at the launch, Carter reflected on how the team came together and the opening it provides for female ranks to participate in the sport. Shepherd also offered brief remarks.
Commissioner of Police Clifton Hicken used his feature address to emphasise the role sport can play in the players’ wider development.
Beyond competition, he explained, participation can support physical fitness, mental well-being and camaraderie. He urged the women to approach rugby with commitment, discipline and a willingness to work together, linking those qualities to their responsibilities in policing.
Hicken also encouraged the players to remain focused and support their teammates, while maintaining professional standards whenever they represent the Force, both on and off the field.
Superintendent Delon Fraser had earlier welcomed the players and highlighted the importance of the team as they began their involvement in rugby.
The formal proceedings concluded with the introduction of the players and a vote of thanks from Anisa Carter.
