Ethan Richards scored four goals as Santa Rosa Primary defeated Anns Grove Primary 9–0 to deliver the biggest win on the opening day of the 13th Courts Optical Under-11 Pee Wee competition yesterday.
The match at the Ministry of Education ground, Carifesta Avenue, highlighted a day that also produced hat-tricks for St John the Baptist’s Elliana Grant, Pakuri Primary’s Miles Roy and defending champions Leonora Primary’s Jonathan Melville.
Richards made an immediate impact, scoring in the first and fourth minutes before adding two more in the 15th and 18th. Kenyano Austin contributed a double in the 16th and 34th minutes, with Cody Dasilva scoring in the 17th, Derick Augustus in the 28th and Kaydon Hill in the 38th.
St John the Baptist enjoyed success both in the opening ceremony and on the field. The Region Seven school won the march past before recording a 6–0 victory over Queenstown Primary.
Grant scored in the fourth, 14th and 55th minutes, supported by Kaydon Fanfair’s ninth-minute goal, Emmanuel Bobb’s effort in the 18th and Chrystian Haly’s strike in the 40th.
Leonora began their title defence with a 3–0 win over Soesdyke Primary. Melville supplied every goal, opening his account in the third minute before adding strikes in the 39th and 41st.
Roy was similarly decisive for Pakuri in their 3–1 victory over Goed Fortuin, scoring in the 15th, 28th and 40th minutes. Nathan Debidin scored Goed Fortuin’s goal in the 40th minute. Goed Fortuin also collected the opening ceremony’s best team banner prize.
The tournament began under brilliant sunshine, bringing together schools from seven regions of Guyana. Minister within the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, Steven Jacobs, and representatives of Courts Optical, Demerara Mutual, Sterling Products and the Beharry Group of Companies gave the young players advice and encouragement.
Among the closer contests, Caleb Tan scored twice to secure GIA’s 2–1 win over Stella Maris Primary. His third-minute opener was cancelled out by Clevon Jacob in the seventh minute, but Tan returned to score the winner in the 34th.
Colaaco and St Pius Primary shared the points after a late exchange of goals. Zahir Critchlow put Colaaco ahead in the 36th minute, with Steve Fiedtkou replying in the 40th to secure a 1–1 draw. Agatash Primary and Redeemer Primary finished goalless.
West Ruimveldt scored three times in quick succession to beat St Aloysius Primary 3–0. Damari Carrington struck in the eighth minute, Malachi Murray in the 10th and Omar Morris in the 11th.
Marian Academy also won 3–0, overcoming St Stephen’s Primary through Juan Diego’s goals in the 13th and 30th minutes and a further effort from Nwora Lincoln in the 32nd.
The results sheet recorded another 3–0 victory for a team named Santa Rosa Secondary against St Theressa Primary. Ethan Richards scored in the 14th minute, followed by Keyano Austin in the 31st and Brandon Atkinson in the 40th.
Elsewhere, Lamar Matthias’s fifth- and 17th-minute goals carried Waramuri Primary to a 2–0 win over Genesis Primary. GIA 2 edged FE Pollard Primary 1–0 through Langdon Paulson in the 10th minute, while Simon Scott struck in the 30th to give St Gabriel Primary a 1–0 victory against Belladrum Primary.
The competition continues next Saturday with another round of group matches.
