The government says that in the first half of this year $89.9 billion of the budgeted $159.1 billion was spent to expand affordable housing for citizens.
In its mid-year report released on Monday, the government said that a total of 3,245 house lots were allocated in the first half of the year with 65 percent allotted to low- and moderate-income households, 27 percent to middle-income households and 8 percent to young professionals.
“Additionally, a total of 4,883 land titles and transports were distributed in the first half of 2026 and more than 2,000 are expected to be distributed in the second half of the year”, the report said.
In the first half of 2026, development works were completed in nine new housing areas, and works are proceeding on 13 housing developments in areas such as Perseverance, Leonora, Wales, Vigilance, Burma and Old England.
Across all income categories, 483 homes were constructed. Works are ongoing for low- and moderate-income houses in areas such as Amelia’s Ward, La Reconnaissance, Yarrowkabra; and in Bartica, Groenveldt, Palmyra and Leonora for middle-income earners, the report said.
For young professional homes, construction is proceeding in Great Diamond, La Bonne Intention, and Prospect. Keeping in mind the mandate to ensure affordable home construction, the report added that housing support initiatives such as the steel and cement subsidy, and the Yarrowkabra homestead programme continued over the six months.
In addition, citizens continue to benefit from direct assistance measures such as building foundation support and construction advancement subsidies.
“Government remains resolute in the development of stronger communities across Guyana through fortifying public infrastructure across the country. This includes the ongoing assessment for the construction of interlock concrete drains and roads in areas such as Onderneeming, Anna Catherina, La Parfaite Harmonie, Perseverance, Covent Garden, La Bonne Intention, Bath, Palmyra, Bartica, Lethem and Amelia’s Ward”, the report asserted.
It said that in the first half of 2026, a total of 625 LED street lamps were installed across the country, and a further 375 are set for installation by the end of the year. In addition, works are ongoing to develop mini-industrial areas in Golden Grove, Enmore, Wales, MetenMeer-Zorg, and No. 75 Village, as well as new and improved recreational and green spaces including in areas such as Meten-Meer-Zorg, Cummings Lodge, Fort Ordnance, and Hampshire.
The report said that the Central Housing and Planning Authority’s (CHPA) single-window application system continues to facilitate easy application and tracking of building permits for citizens and developers across Guyana. In the first half of the year, the report said that a total of 4,292 applications were submitted with over 2,398 applications finalised for residential, commercial, industrial and institutional uses across Guyana.
The report also disclosed that 1,547 women received house lots which represents nearly half of the total recipients of house lots in the first half of the year.
“Further, awareness on key concepts in gender mainstreaming and social inclusion was conducted with over 1,700 public service employees and community leaders and another 500 targeted. The implementation of workplans to be awarded the National Gender Equality and Empowerment Seal (NEES) is being encouraged across public institutions and private sector across the country”, the report stated.
To be accorded the NEES, workplaces must show recognition of diverse needs of mothers, fathers and caregivers while spawning environments free from sexual exploitation, harassment and discrimination. It also promotes equal pay, equal opportunities for career advancement, stronger leadership practices, more inclusive workplace policies, and the elimination of workplace harassment for both women and men.
