Sections of Kitty were without electricity this afternoon after a collision involving a truck and a car damaged the Guyana Power and Light Inc’s (GPL) network.
In a statement, GPL said the accident occurred at approximately 3.30 pm and involved motor lorry GAD 5037 and motor car PAL 9858.
The resulting outage affected customers between Queen Street and Vlissengen Road. Technical teams were assessing the damage and carrying out repairs to restore the electricity supply, the company said.
No one was seriously injured, but GPL warned that the downed power lines could have caused serious injury or death to those involved in the collision and members of the public.
The circumstances surrounding the accident were not immediately known and the Guyana Police Force was investigating.
GPL said it remained concerned about the frequency of traffic accidents involving its infrastructure, noting that they created public-safety risks, damaged critical network components, interrupted service and resulted in substantial repair expenses.
The company said it would seek to recover the cost of repairing or replacing the damaged infrastructure once the circumstances of the collision were determined.
Motorists were urged to exercise greater caution, particularly when travelling near electrical infrastructure.
