The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) is urging property owners and developers to install smoke detectors and automatic sprinkler systems as more multi-storey buildings are constructed across the country.
In a statement, the GFS said it was making the recommendation through its engagement with the Central Housing and Planning Authority. It called for the devices to be considered in homes, apartment buildings, businesses and other premises.
Smoke detectors warn occupants when smoke is present, giving them time to leave and call the fire service. Sprinklers respond to heat and release water near a developing fire, helping to contain it before it spreads, the GFS explained. It noted that sprinklers throughout a building do not usually activate at once; generally, only those nearest the fire do.
The service said sprinkler systems should be designed and installed by qualified professionals, inspected before use and maintained regularly. The design would depend on the building’s size, height and purpose, among other factors.
It recommended smoke detectors on every level of a building, inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas. These should be tested regularly and replaced in line with the manufacturer’s instructions.
The GFS said neither device could prevent a fire from starting, but early warning and suppression could save lives and limit damage.
