Four lifters will make their first international appearances for Guyana today when the country’s final five athletes compete on the penultimate day of the 2026 South American Powerlifting Championships in Santiago, Chile.
Omali Vancooten, Joshua John, Sereste King and Tremel King are among the international newcomers set to represent the Golden Arrowhead, while Bjorn Williams completes the group still to compete.
Their appearance will bring all 17 members of Guyana’s team into action at this year’s championships after 12 athletes, including members of the four-woman contingent, competed earlier in the tournament.
Vancooten and John face a strong international field in the 93kg Open division, with opponents from Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Ecuador.
Attention will then turn to the 105kg Open category, where Sereste King will test himself against lifters representing Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Uruguay and Suriname.
The Surinamese field includes Anis Ade-Thomas, who is Guyanese and previously lifted for Guyana before representing Suriname.
There will also be added Guyanese interest in the 105kg Masters 1 division, where Tremel King and Bjorn Williams will compete alongside each other.
Both are expected to challenge for places on the podium, setting up an interesting battle as Guyana looks to make an impact during the closing stages of the continental championships.
Today’s programme will feature some of the competition’s heavier lifters and provides Guyana with another opportunity to add to its showing in Santiago.
