Housing Ministry says all 89 Cummings Park households relocated

The Ministry of Housing yesterday said it had completed the relocation of all 89 households that occupied the Cummings Park reserve to housing schemes along the East Coast Demerara.

In a statement, the ministry said the relocation was undertaken through the Central Housing and Planning Authority’s (CH&PA) Relocation and Resettlement programme. The reserve extends from Ogle in the east to Sophia in the west.

Housing Minister Collin Croal visited the site yesterday with CH&PA Deputy Director of Community Development, Ravin Singh and Community Development Officer Rawle Aaron.

According to the ministry, the reserve is a “zero-tolerance zone” for informal settlement, and its occupation posed safety hazards because it lies within the flight path of the Eugene F. Correia International Airport.

The ministry said the relocation allowed the families to move to planned housing schemes where they could lawfully own homes and have access to utilities and infrastructure.

The statement did not identify the schemes to which the households were relocated or provide details of the housing arrangements.
