Police have reminded electric cycle owners and riders in Region Three that the cycles must be registered and insured, and that riders must hold a valid driver’s licence.
The reminder was given during traffic education sessions conducted on Saturday by ranks from the Leonora, Tuschen and Vreed-en-Hoop police stations. According to a police statement, drivers attached to West Side Taxi Service and electric cycle owners and users attended sessions at the Tuschen and Vreed-en-Hoop police stations.
Police said electric cycles are classified as motor vehicles under the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic (Amendment) Act 2023 and are subject to registration, licensing, insurance and other applicable requirements. Owners were advised to register their cycles with the Guyana Revenue Authority, ensure they bear the required frame or chassis number, and obtain a certificate of fitness from the police. Riders were also reminded to wear protective helmets.
The sessions covered defensive driving, seat belt use, speed limits, particularly near schools, vehicle maintenance, improper overtaking, fare overcharging and the penalties for driving above the prescribed breath-alcohol limit, police said.
