Mazaruni prison officers save miner after boat mishap

The saving of the miner

Prison officers from Mazaruni Prison rescued a miner after a boat mishap on the Mazaruni River in Region Seven.

The incident occurred at about 10:55hrs yesterday when the miner was transporting fuel to a mining camp in Itaballi, the Guyana Prison Service (GPS) said in a release.

The boat encountered perilous waters and began to partially submerge. Fortunately for the miner, Prison Trade Instructor Jason Acher was heading to Bartica when he spotted the miner in distress.

The release said that the prison officer and his team wasted no time extending a lifeline to the miner, pulling him to safety from the dangerous waters. He was taken to Bartica.

After the rescue, Director of Prisons Nicklon Elliot praised the officers’ courage, calling them true heroes for their selfless commitment to saving a life in the face of adversity.
