The inaugural ExxonMobil Guyana U18 Schools Football competition began in Bartica yesterday, opening a tournament that will bring together 118 school teams from eight of the country’s 10 administrative regions.
Three Mile Secondary claimed the first victory, beating Bartica Secondary 4–0 at the Bartica Community Centre Ground to book a place in the group stage.
Organised by the Vurlon Mills Football Academy (VMFA), the competition features 68 male teams and 50 female teams, placing it among Guyana’s largest grassroots school football initiatives in recent years.

While Region Seven hosted the opening encounter, the nationwide programme of matches is scheduled to begin on October 9. Fixtures for the other participating regions will be unveiled in the coming week.
Yesterday’s opener belonged to Three Mile, whose victory was led by a brace from Riley Ketwaroo. He opened the scoring in the 12th minute to give his side a 1–0 halftime lead.
Three Mile added three goals late in the second half to put the result beyond Bartica Secondary. Ketwaroo scored his second in the 68th minute, Eric Stephens followed in the 71st and Isaiah Daniels rounded off the scoring in the 74th.
