(Trinidad Express) Former West Indies all rounder and TKR coach Dwayne Bravo has called on men in Trinidad and Tobago to speak out against violence and abuse against women, following the circulation of a video showing a man verbally and physically abusing a woman inside a vehicle.
In a social media post, Bravo said the video was unacceptable and urged men to take greater responsibility for their own actions and those of people within their circles.
“We need to do better. We need to do better,” Bravo said, addressing men directly.
He said abuse in any form was wrong and acknowledged that men could also be victims of physical and verbal abuse. However, he said he wanted to use his platform to address men specifically, particularly in relation to the treatment of women.
Bravo said the issue was not limited to T&T, but his concern was focused on the country and people at home. He said men who did not personally engage in abuse but remained silent when friends or people close to them committed such acts also had a responsibility to act.
“We have to take ownership and responsibility for our own actions to make this country a better place,” he said.
Bravo also expressed hope that the video would prompt wider discussion across the country and that support could be found for men who were struggling with issues that contributed to abusive behaviour.
He said his decision to address the matter publicly came from a sense of responsibility to use his platform when such incidents occurred. Bravo called on men to show greater care, love and respect towards women and said he hoped his message would be shared across the country.
