At least one player has already received a professional assessment and is undergoing remedial procedures under a Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) initiative involving psychologist and behaviour modification consultant Wil Campbell.
The Board announced Campbell’s engagement on October 2, saying the move forms part of its continuing modernisation programme and efforts to provide stronger support for Guyana’s cricketers and national teams.
The initiative extends to coaches, managers and other national team members, with the aim of helping them handle the psychological, emotional and professional demands associated with high-performance sport.
According to the GCB, the pressures and expectations of competitive and professional cricket require greater attention to the wellbeing of both athletes and support personnel. The Board said its approach to development must therefore extend beyond technical training, physical conditioning and tactical preparation.
Campbell brings experience in psychological intervention, anger-management therapy, grief therapy, behaviour modification and psychosocial capacity building.
An academic at the University of Guyana, he is also a practising psychologist licensed by the Allied Health Professions Council of Guyana. His consultancy work has involved the Organization of American States, USAID, ExxonMobil Corporation, the Guyana Prison Service and the Ministry of Human Services.
GCB President Bissoondyal Singh welcomed Campbell to the organisation and expressed confidence that his professional expertise would strengthen the development and preparedness of players, coaches and team management personnel.
The Board views the engagement as another part of its efforts to build a more comprehensive and professional support system for Guyana’s cricketers.
It also welcomed the prospect of a productive working relationship with Campbell as it advances its high-performance and player-development programmes.
