Hip replacement gives Lloyd Millington hope after 12 years of struggle

Lloyd Millington

After living with a hip ailment for more than 12 years, Lloyd Millington says a hip replacement at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) has given him renewed hope of returning to the activities that once shaped his daily life.

In a video shared by the hospital on Sunday, Millington described a lengthy struggle which had limited his farming and football coaching.

“A lot of things I couldn’t do. I was just basically surviving,” he said.

GPHC reported that Millington had undergone a successful hip replacement and was recovering. The hospital credited its orthopaedic team and other medical staff for his care.

“This was a long journey,” Millington recalled. “Over 12 years, I’ve had this ailment.”

There were times, he said, when improvement seemed impossible, but he maintained his faith and followed the hospital’s clinic and treatment process.

Millington praised the care he received, particularly the timely medication and visits from physiotherapy staff.

“Clockwork, in terms of medication, visits from the physio,” he said.

An active person involved in farming and football coaching, he described the surgery as “the dawn of a new era for me”.

He also contrasted his experience with negative accounts he had heard about care at the hospital.

“From my experience on this journey, I couldn’t expect it to be any better,” he said.

Millington emphasised following the instructions provided by the medical team, including those concerning self-care.

According to the Mayo Clinic, hip replacement involves removing damaged portions of the hip joint and replacing them with artificial components, usually made from metal, ceramic and hard plastic. The procedure aims to reduce pain and improve movement, and may be considered when hip pain disrupts daily activities and nonsurgical treatment is no longer effective.

Physiotherapy is an important part of recovery, helping patients regain strength and mobility and learn to use walking aids where necessary. Recovery varies between patients, with improvements typically continuing during the first year after surgery, Mayo Clinic notes.

For Millington, however, the prospect of a more active life has brought relief and optimism.

“I’m feeling humble, overjoyed, and looking forward to a brand new day,” he said.
