The Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development is carrying out overnight garbage collection operations across Georgetown as part of efforts to address solid waste accumulation in the city.
A video posted by the Ministry showed a sanitation team working from around 9 p.m. into the early morning hours, collecting household waste along several city routes.
The team began on South Road and later moved through Regent Street, with collections carried out along Crown Street, South Road, Robb Street and North Road.
By 2 a.m., the team had moved to East Ruimveldt, where the Ministry has identified a location as a garbage “hot spot” and placed a skip bin to help manage waste.
However, the team observed that residents were dumping garbage around the skip bin after it became full instead of placing the waste inside it.
The Ministry urged residents to use the bins properly and refrain from leaving garbage around them, noting that the skip bins are emptied regularly.
The overnight operation comes as Local Government Minister Priya Manickchand outlines measures to improve garbage collection in Georgetown, including additional collection in densely populated communities, the reinstatement of carpet-waste collection and greater enforcement against littering and illegal dumping.
