Rookie Sookdeo sparks dramatic win as Westside Golf builds community appeal

Rookie golfer Sookdeo delivered the decisive shot as Team 4 captured the Three-Hole Best Ball Tournament on Sunday at the Westside Golf Course, capping another day aimed at introducing more people to the sport.

The competition followed the second Umami $1 Million Hole-in-One Challenge, which attracted men, women and junior golfers chasing the $1,000,000 cash prize.

While no player managed to record the required hole-in-one, the challenge will remain open until a winner emerges, according to Umami Managing Director Chris Persaud.

“It will continue to be made available until it’s won!” Persaud said.

With the million-dollar prize still untouched, the focus then moved to the Three-Hole Best Ball Tournament, where experienced golfers were paired with newer players in a relaxed competitive setting.

Team 2, captained by Bashur, appeared well placed for victory heading into the final hole after a superb chip from just off the green gave them a slim advantage.

Sookdeo responded with a standout shot of his own for Team 4, helping to overturn the deficit and secure the win.

Team 4 was led by captain Afwraz Baksh and also included junior golfer Czavier Raghunanan, Sookdeo and Orind.

The winners received hampers filled with merchandise provided by Sterling Products Ltd.

Beyond the result, organisers used the tournament to give beginners practical experience in competition while allowing them to learn about golf etiquette, teamwork and decision-making from more established players.

The Guyana Golf Association, Nexgen Golf Academy and Westside Golf Course have been working together to expand access to golf, with particular emphasis on attracting beginners, women and junior players.

A similar tournament is planned for every weekend as part of that effort.
