A China Railway First Group subcontractor died on Friday after coming into contact with the GPL’s live electricity network.
A release yesterday from the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) said the sub-contractor succumbed after coming into contact with a section of GPL’s live electricity network at approximately 1 am while conducting pipe-laying works in the vicinity of Congress Place in Sophia. The deceased person was not named.
The accidental contact with GPL’s live network also caused GPL’s Sophia F3 feeder to trip, resulting in brief interruptions to electricity service in Lamaha Gardens and Section K, Campbellville for approximately one hour. The release said that GPL’s Sophia F6 feeder also went offline for approximately 30 minutes, affecting customers in Areas A to E, Field Sophia.
GPL reminds all contractors undertaking works near electricity infrastructure of the need to follow established safety protocols.
This includes coordinating with GPL before work begins, identifying electrical hazards and ensuring that the necessary protective measures are in place before proceeding.
