Suspect in killing of Westminster teenager surrenders to police

Akeem Bannister, 17, who was killed at Westminster on Sunday

A 39-year-old construction worker was arrested on Monday after his legal representatives handed him over to police in connection with the killing of 17-year-old Akeem Bannister at Westminster, La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara.

Police said the man was handed over at the La Parfaite Harmonie Police Station at approximately 10.50 am. He had injuries about his body and was escorted to the West Demerara Regional Hospital for medical attention.

Bannister, called “Boy”, a construction worker of Westminster, died following a confrontation near a supermarket in the community on Sunday afternoon.

According to the initial police report, an argument following a card game led to a confrontation between a 26-year-old construction worker and another man.

Police alleged that the 26-year-old armed himself with a cutlass and chopped the other man on his right hand. The latter reportedly drew a knife, and a scuffle followed during which the 26-year-old sustained injuries.

Bannister subsequently became involved and was allegedly stabbed three times in his lower limbs.

He and the injured 26-year-old were taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where Bannister died while receiving treatment.

Police said CCTV footage had been obtained for review. Investigations are continuing.
