The police say they are investigating a river mishap which occurred on Friday June 12, 2026 about 16:00hrs at the Moruca River Mouth, North West District, Region #1, resulting in the death of John Henry, called ‘Johnny’, a 55-year-old businessman and boat captain of Kumaka Waterfront, Moruca.
Initial enquiries revealed that Henry and his nephew departed Kumaka earlier that day in a blue and white wooden-shed boat, powered by a 225 HP Yamaha outboard engine, and travelled to Charity, Essequibo, to buy supplies.
About 15:40hrs, they left Charity for Moruca with the boat loaded with goods. While proceeding along the Moruca River Mouth, Henry reportedly lost control of the vessel and struck a large tree limb overhanging the southern side of the river.
As a result of the collision, the boat was severely damaged and both occupants sustained injuries.
They were subsequently taken to the Kumaka District Hospital, where Henry succumbed to his injuries.
The other occupant received medical treatment and was later transferred to the Lima Public Hospital, where he remains admitted in a stable condition.
Investigations are ongoing.
