A six-year-old boy died after sustaining a chop wound to his neck at Parika, East Bank Essequibo, this afternoon, the police said.
The child, identified as Ifeng Cao, a Chinese national, was taken to the De Kinderen Regional Hospital, where a doctor pronounced him dead on arrival.
According to a police statement, initial enquiries indicated that the child sustained the injury at about 3.45 pm during an incident involving a male Chinese national.
The man was arrested and remains in custody as police investigate the killing.
Police said further information would be provided as it becomes available.
