Brickdam building will be new police HQ

The new Brickdam Police Headquarters

The new Brickdam Police Headquarters, also known as the National Security Tower, is 90% complete and will also be the new police HQ.

Senior Minister in the Office of the President with responsibility for Finance, Dr Ashni Singh, who is currently performing the functions of Minister of Home Affairs, yesterday inspected the 11-storey facility along with Commissioner of Police Clifton Hicken and other officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Guyana Police Force, contractor R. Bassoo and Sons and China National Construction and Agricultural Corporation (CNQC).

During the visit, the delegation received an update on the progress of the works and toured the building, where they examined its layout and planned operational functions.

According to statements from the Ministry of Finance and the Guyana Police Force, Singh said the project represented more than the replacement of the Brickdam Police Station, which was destroyed by fire in October 2021.

He said the new headquarters symbolises the government’s investment in developing a modern, technologically equipped, intelligence-led and citizen-focused police force capable of meeting the country’s evolving security needs.

Singh added that the construction of the facility reflected the government’s commitment to strengthening the capacity of the Guyana Police Force and improving public safety.

When completed, the building will become the Force’s new headquarters, replacing Eve Leary, and will house all of the services currently offered at the existing headquarters.

Hicken said the expansion of police infrastructure was necessary as Guyana continues to undergo rapid economic and population growth.

He said the new headquarters would significantly improve the Force’s operational capacity while supporting more efficient delivery of policing services to the public.

The government has said the facility forms part of a wider programme to modernise the Guyana Police Force through investments in infrastructure, technology, transportation, surveillance systems and other crime-fighting resources.
