Calvin Ming has been appointed the new chairman of MPS, with the formal announcement made last evening by his father, Stanley Ming, as the company marked its 35th anniversary and formally ushered in a new generation of leadership.
Stanley Ming announced the transition during the company’s 35th anniversary celebration at the Pegasus Suites, describing Calvin as the person now leading MPS into its next phase.
The younger Ming brings an entrepreneurial background to the position, having made significant business investments of his own while also establishing himself in motorsport. He is a former FIA International Formula 4 champion and local go-kart champion.
Ming has also worked as a civil engineer and holds an advanced degree in project management. According to his family, he has led his own company and brings a forward-looking approach to the family business.
Stanley Ming said his own perspective on the younger generation changed after travelling with Calvin to China and Las Vegas and seeing firsthand the business relationships and ideas his son had developed.
He said the experience convinced him that the younger generation should be given the opportunity to take the lead.
The transition comes as MPS looks to expand its portfolio of products and services, with Stanley Ming saying the team is already working on further developments.
Calvin will be supported by CEO John Chin and directors Audrey Ford, Samuel Ming and his parents Stanley and Michelle Ming with the company expected to focus on operational advancement, staff and succession planning, customer continuity and expansion.
Despite the change in leadership, the company says its core values will remain unchanged, including customer satisfaction, community partnerships and philanthropy.
The appointment marks a significant moment for MPS, which is celebrating 35 years in business and has built its reputation through the distribution of Yamaha products and a wider portfolio of products and services, as well as its community involvement across Guyana.
Stanley Ming also used the anniversary occasion to reflect on the importance of passing the business to the next generation, saying younger leaders can bring new ideas and approaches to established family businesses.
President Irfaan Ali was listed as the keynote speaker for the 35th anniversary celebration but was absent from the event. No replacement speaker was assigned to deliver the keynote address on his behalf, and no explanation was given during the proceedings for the President’s absence.
